Further Information

Children: The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is suitable for children and adolescents who require protection against meningococcal groups A, C, W, and Y, particularly before travel or for certain school or university requirements.

Side effects: Side effects are usually mild and temporary. These may include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, headache, or tiredness. Serious side effects are rare.

Additional precautions: Meningococcal infection spreads through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing, or sharing utensils. Good hygiene practices and avoiding close contact with unwell individuals can help reduce risk, especially when travelling or in crowded settings.

Risks of meningitis: Meningococcal disease can cause meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Symptoms may develop rapidly and can include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, rash, sensitivity to light, and confusion. Early vaccination helps protect against these serious infections.
